Beaumaris is a captivating seaside town, with its mix of medieval, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Its name is based on the Norman “Beaumaris”, meaning “fair marsh”, a description of the site chosen by Edward 1 for the last of his Iron ring of castles, constructed in his bid to control the Welsh.
Beaumaris castle is a United Nations World Heritage site and was constructed between 1295-1330 to form perfectly symmetrical concentric lines of fortification, with a moat and a dock for access by supply ships.
Beaumaris Gaol is an interesting attraction with lots of history and a wonderful guided tour.
Beaumaris has lively cafes, pubs, restaurants, and hotels with good food to suit every taste. There is some excellent shopping to be done, marked by quality independent traders. Take a walk through the town, starting by going out of the front gates of Ben & Holly’s Hideaways and taking a stroll along the seafront, taking in the pier and the views over the Menai Strait to Snowdonia, continue through the charming streets with their picturesque cottages, many painted in soft pastel colours.
The pier is a great attraction and kids are happy to spend hours trying to catch crabs. For little ones there is the outdoor paddling pool and a kid’s playground up near the castle. The small beach is a great place to take a rest, enjoy the views and eat an ice cream whilst the children make sand castles.
